Pre-Date Hawaiian Thanksgiving Holidays for American Pilgrims

It was a time for eating, sporting events, and religious rituals.
Makahiki took place between November and February, during the rainy season, when there was n’t much agricultural work to be done. As a result, individuals could concentrate on appreciating and celebrating the wealth of the produce.
All wars and conflicts were prohibited during Makahiki, but it was still customary to ask God to strike down one’s foes. People from various territories were free to travel and engage in peaceful conversation during this window of opportunity. Areas should have gathered at this time to fortify their cultural ties.
The Makahiki activities, which featured riding, boat racing, boxing, wrestling, and other athletic competitions, were one of the event’s high points. People used these activities as a way to honor their physical prowess and test their skills. Surprisingly, the festival featured a wide range of physical activities that encouraged fertility.
Spiritual rituals played a significant role in Makahiki as well. People may pray to Lono and make concessions to him, thanking him for the harvest and pleading for his favor in the coming year.
For the old Hawaiians, Makahiki was a time of great joy and celebration.
It was a time to express gratitude for the presence of the area, to revere their gods and grandparents, and to unite as one.
Up until the early 19th century, Makahiki was still observed in Hawaii. Western holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas eventually took its place. But, Makahiki traditions have come back to life in recent years, and many Hawaiians still hold a celebration of this nature of society, peace, gratitude. The Pacific Scottish Festival &amp, Highland Games, which take place on April 6 and 7, 2024, from 9 am to 4 am at Jefferson Elementary School basis, 324 Kapahulu Avenue, in Honolula, are a fashionable smile to the Makahiki game. The 2024 Athletic Director, Chris Harmes, has info for anyone who is interested in taking part.
The concept of a festival that emphasized abundance, thanks, and peace was shared by all Pacific cultures, despite the fact that the specific customs varied. There are similarities between the harvest party and expressions of gratitude for life’s blessings, even though they might not exactly line up with the British Thanksgiving.
